MELASMA AND PREGNANCY MASK

Melasma, or “mask of pregnancy,” affects about 10% of women worldwide, and not just pregnant women. It appears in the form of a brown spot, spread symmetrically, often in the center of the face.

50% of women who develop melasma have a family history. The two other major causes of its appearance are a hormonal upheaval and exposure to the sun.

Like other brown spots, melasma is due to the accumulation of a pigment: melanin. The increase in the quantity of estrogen and UV rays disrupt the melanin factories (melanocytes) and cause a lasting overproduction of melanin which then accumulates in skin cells (keratinocytes).
